HanbitSoft has signed an IP licensing deal with developer Arc9 Games to bring its long-running PC MMORPG, Aika Online, to mobile. The new title, currently going by the working name Aika Mobile, is being built by a studio formed from the core team that led the original game during its peak years.
(toc)What Made the Original Aika Online Stand Out
Aika Online launched in 2009 as HanbitSoft's in-house MMORPG, and it built its reputation on large-scale Realm vs. Realm warfare that drew a dedicated audience across several regions. The game's design and storytelling were strong enough to earn it three honors at the 2009 Korea Game Awards, including the Excellence Award, the Game Planning and Scenario Award, and the Online Game category title. For a lot of players, that combination of sprawling nation-versus-nation battles and a distinct world is what made the game memorable in the first place.
The Pran System Is Getting a Combat Role
One of the bigger changes planned for Aika Mobile involves the Pran, the companion creatures tied to each player. In the original game, Prans mostly functioned as support and growth-focused partners that followed the player around. For the mobile version, the developers are reworking them into active combat allies that fight directly alongside the player, with skill synergies meant to open up more strategic options during battle.
Massive Faction Warfare Is Coming to Mobile
The series' signature large-scale faction battles are also being carried over, with the team adapting fights that historically involved thousands of users into a format that works on phones. Pulling that off without the screen turning into a cluttered mess means a reworked UI and a set of quality-of-life features designed to keep the experience readable even when a battlefield is packed.
What to Expect From Aika Mobile
- Prans evolving from passive support companions into active combat partners with their own skill synergies
- Upgraded visuals and more dynamic combat effects compared to the original PC version
- The return of large-scale Realm vs. Realm and nation warfare, rebuilt for mobile devices
- A reworked, more intuitive UI aimed at both longtime fans and newcomers
- Development led by Arc9 Games, a studio founded by core members of the original Aika Online team
A HanbitSoft representative said the collaboration is meaningful, noting it is "truly meaningful to collaborate once again with the core developers" who shaped Aika Online's golden age, and that the goal is to blend the original's large-scale warfare with the new Pran cooperative combat system to satisfy both veterans and new players.
What's Next
For now, HanbitSoft and Arc9 Games are keeping most specifics under wraps. Both companies say they plan to share more details on core features, system structures, and development progress in the months ahead. Given how closely Arc9 Games is tied to the original team, there's reason to think Aika Mobile could actually capture some of what made the PC version click, though how that translates once it's in players' hands is still an open question.
